#SriLanka #trade gap widened sharply in June 2018, First half increase was litter over 20%. January & February gap exceed over $1Bn. YoY increase by end of years of 2015 & 2016 was around 2%, but it has jumped to 10.68% at end of 2017.

#SriLanka Highest weekly net foreign investment withdrawal from government securities recorded this week. LKR 7.5Bn worth of net investments were withdraw during week. But net foreign inflow of LKR 55Mn was recorded at Colombo Stock Exchange for this week.

#SriLanka Unit trust market LKR 72Bn with 40,921 unit holders as at 31st July 2018. Open ended Money Market Funds has generated average of 6.2% YTD return while open ended income funds generate average 6.4% YTD return.

Growth of #SriLanka Colombo & greater Colombo House constructions seem to be picking up in the 4th Q 2017. But the growth of other building construction is falling further.

#SriLanka Treasury Bill yields fell slightly at today's Auction held at CBSL where 3Month tbill fell 0.01% and 6 month tbill fell by 0.02% and 12 month remained same. Higher demand was seen for 12 Month tbills

#SriLanka is lagging behind on performance on trade logistics compared with Vietnam , Indonesia , Philippines been located at most strategic place @ south Asian trade root. Country is worse on timeliness where shipments reach consignees within scheduled or expected delivery times

Rice Index weakened for the second successive month in most Asian origins, as in the absence of substantial demand, currency movements and competition among exporters. Yet international prices in the first seven months of 2018 were 14.5% higher than corresponding levels in 2017.

#SriLanka 's tea export earning to Iran, Syria, Turkey & Russia was 43% out of total in 2013 & it come down to 36.5% in 2017. Inflow from Turkey has been on the increasing trend. But all those market is badly effected by sanctions or economic turmoil.

Fall of Turkey LIRA hit the currencies of other major emerging markets, such as India and South Africa. #SriLanka being frontier market, has less correlation to what is happening in developed and emerging markets...but see some similarities btw SL & Turkey

#SriLanka still heavily depends on coal and thermal for electricity generation. More than 70% of the electricity generated by these two. Hydro electricity has contributed around 20% during last 24 month except Nov & Dec last year.

#SriLanka water level at Agro based reservoirs are up from end of last year. Storage level dip in last month after releasing water for cultivation. Last two quarter GDP in Agriculture was 7.1% and 4.8% growth is more than other two sectors. But Agro contribution to GDP only 7%

#SriLanka unemployment rate rose to 4.5% (1Q 2018) from 4.1% (1Q 2017). All three sector employment declined by average 3% compered with same period 2017. Total of 268,850 employment has reduced from 4Q 2017 to this 1Q 2018.

#SriLanka no of vehicle growth seems to be have positive relationship with employment over last five years. But growth of Land Vehicles-Tractors has not positively correlate with total employment in agriculture, in fact employment in Agriculture has declined over last 5 years.

Vehicle population has increased by 49% from 2012 to 2017, but road network increased only by 8% ( A,B &E road length increased only by 1%), that resulted increase of 'No of vehicle per 1Km' by 38% in #SriLanka .

#SriLanka CBSL kept the policy rate unchanged, while foreign investments in Gov Securities and equities record net outflow of LKR 260Mn and LKR 82Mn during this week. YTD Foreign bond holding has fallen by 11.3%. But yields across all the maturities came down during the week.
